Structures made from metal such as steel barns and garages are put to numerous uses. Metal structures can be used to accomodate agricultural needs such as permanent housing for livestock, storage for hay and/or farm equipment, shelters for vehicles -- in the form of carports and metal garages -- shop facilites, warehouse space, commercial buildings or even guard houses.

Metal Garages and Carports

One of the most popular uses for a metal structure is the steel garage or carport. A carport is a structure which provides protection from the elements such as wind, rain, snow or sunlight to the vehicles which are stored under them. Carports have a cover on the top and are often open on all four sides. Manufacturers offer various size options in terms of width, length and height. Carports can be free standing on steel legs or can be attached to a building. Generally they are available with several feature options in terms of roof and side covering design such as vertically or horizontally ribbed steel paneling.

There are many distributors of metal garages and carports across the country. Some of these companies provide online pricing and ordering capabilities. Usually, manufacturers offer an installation service on the consumer's prepared level lot. Sometimes the delivery and installation services are included free with the product purchase.

Ready made models come in a variety of color and size options. They can be purchased with sufficient height and width to house RVs and large trailers. Carports and garages can also be custom made to meet the specific customer requirements.

Metal garages are enclosed structures and therefore offer significantly greater protection to the vehicle in contrast to a carport. Therefore, garages are more expensive and hence many customers today opt for a carport rather than an enclosed garage. Vehicles today are also better insulated and therefore can do with a carport and may not require an enclosed metal garage.

Metal garages or carports can be installed on a level surface in nearly any location including close proximity to water like at a boat dock. Manufacturers can provide wind and snow load certification for their structures if required by the customer or the state in which it is being erected. These structures can also be supplied as a D-I-Y (do it yourself) kit. Manufacturers can provide metal garages with different structural ratings to suit the requirements of specific states.

Metal Barns for Agricultural Use

Another common use of metal structures are metal barns for agricultural use. Metal barns are often used to house livestock such as horses or cattle. They are also used to shelter agricultural commodities and farm equipment. Barns can be produced with a variety of standard or custom design options as well. A raised center aisle barn design offers increased ventilation and natural light within the barn.

For horse barns, manufacturers offer options for dividing walls, grills and windows, stall fronts, and accessories such as feeders or waterers, saddle racks and mats. Metal barns are also used as loading and holding sheds for cattle, as pens for training horses and as shelters in pastures.

Another related agricultural use of metal barns is as hay and commodity storage shelters. Necessary features of such structures are durability, and the ability to preserve and protect the commodity or equipment stored in them. Thus it is important that the structure prevents the entry of rodents as well as withstand rain and snow.

Metal garages and metal barns have grown in use over the years and are today popular choices for protecting vehicles and livestock due to their ease of installation and cost effective functionality.
